THE ROYAL PALACE

The Royal Palace of Madrid (in Spanish: “Palacio Real de Madrid”) or Palace of the Orient (“Palacio de Oriente”), official residence of the King of Spain, is located in Place de l’Orient, in the heart of the capital Spanish.

It is a palace with only formal functions, King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and their children actually residing in the Zarzuela Palace complex.

The current palace was built between 1738 and 1755 on the orders of Philip V and inhabited by King Charles III in 1764.

The Royal Palace has become a museum open to the public.

THE CYBÈLE PALACE

The Palace of Cybele (“Palacio de Cibeles“), called Palace of Communications (“Palacio de Comunicaciones”) until 2011, is located on the Place de Cibeles, one of the liveliest, most famous and most remarkable squares from Madrid. Since 2007, it has housed the main seat of the town hall.

Construction began in 1905 and the building was inaugurated in 1919. Originally, Cybèle’s palace was the headquarters of post and telecommunications.

THE PRADO MUSEUM, THE MOST FAMOUS MONUMENT IN MADRID

The Prado Museum (“Museo Nacional del Prado“) is one of the largest and most important art galleries in the world. It mainly presents European paintings (Flemish, Spanish, French, Italian and German) from the 14th century to the beginning of the 19th century, collected by the Habsburgs and the Bourbons. The museum opened for the first time to the public in 1819.

LA PLAZA MAYOR

Located in the Center district and in the Sol district, near the Puerta del Sol, the square is in the form of a rectangle of 129 meters by 941. Entirely pedestrianized, it is accessible by nine entrances, several of which connect it to calle Mayor, to the north.

The origins of the square date back to the 16th century, when it was one of the city limits. Named Place du Faubourg, it then housed the main municipal market and underwent initial transformations that aimed to provide it with a hall (lonja).

RETIRO PARK AND CRYSTAL PALACE

The Retiro Park is a large 118-hectare park located in the center of Madrid. It was created between 1630 and 1640.

The park shelters a large rectangular basin in front of which is erected the monument to Alfonso XII of Spain in the center of which stands a monumental bronze equestrian statue made in 1904 by Mariano Benlliure, a rose garden, 12 statues in the Galerie du Parc and two Palace, including the Crystal Palace.

THE PUERTA DEL SOL, A HISTORIC SYMBOL OF THE MONUMENTS OF MADRID

The Puerta del Sol (“The Door of the Sun”) is one of the most famous and lively squares in Madrid. It is located in the heart of the city. The Puerta del Sol was originally one of the gates to cross the wall that surrounded Madrid in the 15th century. Its name comes from the fact that on the pediment of one of its buildings there used to be a sundial.

THE PLAZA OF SPAIN

The Spanish Steps (“Plaza de España”) is a square located in the center of Madrid, known for its monument dedicated to the Castilian writer Miguel de Cervantes and for the skyscrapers that line it, which are the Spain building and the Tower of Madrid. Built in the 1950s in a style that is both neoclassical and international neo-baroque, these two buildings reveal a certain taste for North American gigantism under the Franco dictatorship.

THE CATHEDRAL OF ALMUDENA

Santa María La Real de La Almudena Cathedral is the newest cathedral in Madrid, the capital of the Kingdom of Spain, built opposite the Royal Palace during the 20th century. It is a church 102 meters long and 73 meters high built on the basis of a mixture of different styles: neoclassical outside, neo-Gothic inside and neo-Roman in the crypt. John Paul II consecrated it during his fourth trip to Spain, June 15, 1993.
